Device Servers in the Factory 2006/01/13 Linking 60 thermometers to the fast Ethernet and the control room
VOLKTEK leverages its technology to deliver a serial-to-IP, cost-saving solution.
The Mission:
Link 60 serial-type thermometers - that are spread out inside a factory in Shenzhen –- to the Ethernet and control room.
Requirements:
The solution would have to "lend" IP addresses and IP communicability to the simple, serial-type devices. It would also have to be rugged and reliable, as well as cost-effective.
Solution:
VOLKTEK's IRF-633 Device Server was chosen as the perfect device for the job because it is part of VOLKTEK's Industrial Ethernet Solutions range (industrial-grade ruggedness and reliability) and can link RS-232/422/485 cable to 100Base-TX cable, while providing the IP-enabling bridge from the IP-based control room to the serial thermometers.
Benefits:
By linking the serial-type thermometers to VOLKTEK's IRF-633 Device Servers, the thermometers can now be monitored from the IP-based control PCs in the control room. This means that managers can get real-time information on the crucial problem of temperature build-ups in the plant, and respond accordingly. Temperature checking can now be done from the central control room and there is no more need to waste resources on checking the thermometers manually.
Why VOLKTEK?
Only sixty IRF-633s were required to connect all the thermometers to the factory's Ethernet LAN, while acting as the "IP-bridge" between the IP-based control room and the serial-based thermometers.
Our device servers are competitively priced and they removed the need to replace the serial-type thermometers – resulting in cost-savings for our client. The IRF-633 is designed for industrial environments and is user-friendly, as well as easy to install and maintain.
