Gigabit Converters in the Airport
2006/03/17

Linking remotely situated terminals to each other and the control room
VOLKTEK delivers a flexible, distance-bridging solution via its Ethernet technology.

Background:
After building their award-winning airport outside Kuala Lumpur, the airport company needed to link the LANs of the four remotely situated terminals with each other and with the airport's control room. The links would have to carry data-rich, high-bandwidth-requiring transmissions from devices such as security cameras, while maintaining a high degree of data integrity.

Ethernet to the rescue:
It was immediately clear that the distances which had to be bridged, and the transmission quality that was required, would mean that optical Ethernet would be the only solution. VOLKTEK's NGF-741 Media Converter was chosen to link the LANs' Gigabit copper cable to distance-extending fiber-optic cable. The 741 comes in various models that are each designed for a specific distance range, and thus enabled planners to retain maximum signal quality while utilizing the 741's tailor-made distancing. The converters are completely transparent when installed, so the network performs exactly the way it would have if there was no connecting device.

The Mission:
Link multiple terminal-based LANs -- located in different parts of the airport (over a total distance of 110km) -- to each other and a control room.

Requirements:
Bridge long transmission distances of up to 50km. The data would include high-bandwidth-requiring signals from devices such as security cameras, so the links would have to support a high transmission rate and a high degree of data integrity.

Solution:
VOLKTEK's NGF-741 (20km and 40km versions) Media Converters were chosen to link the terminals' copper-based Gigabit cabling to fiber-based Gigabit cabling, which extended transmission distances tremendously.

Why VOLKTEK?
VOLKTEK has a long history of specializing in media conversion for the optical Ethernet and we were able to supply our client with precise calculations regarding the maximum ratio for transmission-strength-to-cable-length, budget ratios, etc.

Because we specialize in media conversion for the optical Ethernet, we produce all the media converters, switches, connectors, etc. that our clients may require
– this means that we deliver one-stop shopping.

The NGF-741 is user-friendly and easy to install and maintain
– simply plug in the cables and play.

Our business plan is to manufacture devices that are highly dependable while also being cost-effective. Our media converters are competitively priced and they remove the need to replace existing infrastructure, resulting in double cost-savings for our clients.

We can customize software design.
