Serial-to-fiber in Korean industries

Linking the past to the future in a power plant, a steel plant and a freeway

VOLKTEK delivers converters that link serial devices to optical cable for distance extension and EMI-resistance

1) Power Plant:

  • Mission: Link multiple serial-type devices (RS-232) in a power plant to a central control room via Fast Ethernet.
  • Requirements:Solution must extend transmission distances far beyond limits of copper cable. Solution must safeguard the integrity of the transmitted data in an area filled with EMI-generating sources.
  • Solution: VOLKTEK’s IRF-631 Media Converters link RS-232 cable to 100FX fiber cable. IRF-631MT/MC models were used because they are the multi-mode versions of the IRF-631. From the converters, the data can now flow safely to the control room, free from the data-corrupting influences of the electromagnetic waves that are constantly generated in power plants.

2) Steel Plant:

  • Mission: Link serial-type devices (RS-422 and RS-485) like heat and pressure sensors to a central control room via Fast Ethernet.
  • Requirements: Solution must extend transmission distances far beyond limits of copper cable. EMI-proof qualities of fiber cable are also advisable.
  • Solution: VOLKTEK’s IRF-629 Media Converters link RS-422 and RS-485 cable to 100FX fiber cable. IRF-629MT/MC models were used because they are the multi-mode transmission versions of the IRF-629. The multi-mode fiber cable between the converters and the control room can now transmit data up to 2km and it protects data from any electromagnetic interference along its length.

3) Electronic Highway:

  • Mission: Link multiple electronic information boards (RS-232) on a highway.
  • Requirements: Solution must extend transmission distances to the maximum.
  • Solution: VOLKTEK’s IRF-631SC-30/60/100/120 (variable distances – with SC connector) was used because it is the single-mode version of the IRF-631 (RS-232 to fiber) converter and can extend distances up to 120km.

Overview:
Hundreds of VOLKTEK’s IRF-629 and IRF-631s were sold in South Korea because these two converters fill the need for conversion from industry-based, serial-type HMIs that use RS-232/422/485 cabling.
These converters are plug-n-play and effortlessly link legacy devices to Fast Ethernet, thus making it possible to transmit data point-to-point over 120km of fiber cabling – and without any interference from electromagnetic waves.

Why VOLKTEK?

  • Our optical Ethernet technology links serial cable to fiber and thus makes it possible to transmit data seamlessly through high-speed, high bandwidth, distance-extending fiber cable.
  • VOLKTEK specializes in delivering complete Ethernet solutions by producing all the media converters, device servers, switches and connectors needed. We aim to provide one-stop shopping.
  • Our solutions are very cost-effective because they are competitively priced and reliable.
