A harbor management company in the Hong Kong Harbor recently needed Ethernet solutions to communicate from a control room with control devices inside their massive rail-mounted gantry cranes. Such communication would be very important because the cranes work in close proximity with people and other cranes – and catastrophic accidents are a real risk. The transmission link would have to be rugged and reliable.
The Solution: VOLKTEK's devices were found to be perfect for the job, because they allow signal transmission from the cranes' serial control devices to high-bandwidth optical cables that can guarantee transmission quality. VOLKTEK's NXF-742 Media Converter was selected to convert the signal from serial to optical and the INS-801 Industrial Switch was chosen to link crane sets of four together, because it has five 10/100Mbps ports. All three these devices can operate well in extreme, industrial-type conditions.
